I'm through with Rangers. Had 2.
First was a '91, 3.0 V6 with 5 spd., 2WD. Gutless unless you really reved it. Mileage was only about 18. $700 repair on the front end, a weak spot on Rangers. My '78 Volvo weighed about the same, would take hills better and got about 21 mpg. Not a bad little truck, but not great either and not impressive in any way.
Heard the mileage with the 4.0L was almost as good and replaced the '91 with a '97, 4WD, auto. 17 mpg in mostly rural road driving, hardly any stop & go. By the time I dumped it with 115K on it, I had had the front end overhauled, $700, the trans overhauled, $2,600 and both heads repaired, $1,200. Seems like there was another big repair, but I have successfully forgotten it if there was. Changed the oil about 3-5K, never abused it, mostly just commuted with it, although I did pull a light trailer a couple times a year. Both Rangers leaked water around the windshields and were difficult to seal.
Switched to an '05 Tacoma. I realize it is over your budget, but FWIW I am very happy with it after 2 years of ownership. I hope it meets it's reputation. Bigger, heavier, more powerful than the '97 Ranger, but 18-20 mpg.
Good luck in your search. Around here the Nissans in that price range look like middle '90s vintage.
