we don't need to update the venerable B2XX series again. They've done well for Saab, but newer technology leads to less costly to produce, and more efficient engines.
The motors in the 9-3SS & SC, for example are very modern motors that Saab couldn't possibly have designed, engineered and tested all on their own. They're still fairly young, but I've not heard any major issues with either of them, and they've been in service since MY 2003.
As for the BMW motor, that's still a ways off, and dependent on whether Saab partners with BMW to make this new 9-2 (or is it 92?) they keep talking about on the MINI platform. It makes perfect sense to me to use the MINI powerplant in the MINI chassis. Sheet metal and interior bits are much more easily (and cheaply!) re-worked into a modern 92 than designing a new motor.
