I'm not trying to be facetious, even though it may seem that way. I suppose you could consider the area in which I live an exception to "the rule". Our main industry is agriculture and I would be willing to bet that about 90% of the population here owns or drives a pickup on a regular basis. Granted, there are some of those that simply wouldn't be able to give you a good reason as to why they own/drive a pickup, but here's my argument/justification:
I think it only makes sense to own/drive a vehicle that meets the majority of your needs the majority of the time. I would love to drive my Saab to work and pull a pickup out of my back pocket when I need one, but that's simply an impossibility. I don't think it would be wise to own a different vehicle or mode of transportation for every possible scenario that might present itself in a day's time. Having that said, my pickup is my primary transportation, I drive it every single day, and properly utilize it on most of those days.
When I lived in Tennessee and worked in Nashville, it would have been silly for me to own/drive a pickup. Obviously, it would have been quite convenient to have one for occasional weekend hauls, but in the end, it didn't meet most of my needs most of the time. It's no different than saying someone should drive a moped because a car has 4 too many seats and a bunch of air in the trunk. I assume you drive a car on a daily basis because everything you deal with in a day doesn't fit in your pocket.
I'm certainly not trying to be defensive. I just wanted to balance the argument a little bit and possibly give another perspective. As previously stated, this is probably more of an exception than "the rule", but there are cases in which pickups can, should, and need to be driven like cars. But yes, a lot of the pickup owners/drivers simply would not be able to legitimize their primary mode of transportation...other than the fact that "it's macho and I need it once a month on the weekend...maybe." Drive safely and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
