because according to Wikipedia the socket wrench was invented in the 1860s by an American, J J Richardson of Vermont.
The UK has been officially metricated for decades (apart from distances like miles on the roads) but nobody believes it, really. Well, I do, because I design furniture and it's a whole lot easier using millimetres than fractions of inches.
It is actually illegal to sell draught beer and cider in metric measures here, so the famous pint continues to survive, warm and flat as ever.
You may be thinking of BSF (British standard fine) as against BSW British standard Whitworth. Same heads, same thread angle but finer thread pitch and shallower depth. Thee was even a BSC for pedal cycles, and BA which turned up on small stuff. And apparently for 35 years or so Morris and MG used bolts that had metric threads but Whitworth heads - aaargh!
I don't really know any of this stuff -except about the beer - I just looked it up.
