A/C Stop Leak - good or bad idea? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 16:46:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There is a somewhat "slow leak" in the A/C (R134a) on my wife's Audi A4, and it's been this way for years; a recharge will provide very good cooling for about 4 - 6 weeks, then coolish air thereafter. It's now August and it's past the very good cooling period; I'm thinking about putting in another can of R134a, noticed that various stop leak products are available at the local auto parts store.
All leak tracing has come up blank, pointing to the evaporator core as the source of the leak (a not uncommon problem on this vintage Audi). Replacing the evaporator core on this car is a nightmare; one must remove the center console, steering wheel, airbags and complete dashboard to get in to it, which is several days worth of work for a DIY (and outrageous at the dealer, almost what the car is worth).
Has anyone had success with A/C stop leak products? Any recommended brands? I'm reluctant to gunk up the entire system as a possible side effect (compressor is still good), but less reluctant to replace the evaporator. Or is this topic similar to the ongoing battle on Barr's Leak?
