But if the budget allows, buy the boat and have fun. The Cat 27 is a popular boat, easily sailed, and a good pocket cruiser. They also seem popular in PHRF class racing, and give you a fair shot at competing with casual sailors. If you decide to down or upsize, it should be fairly easy to unload the boat if it is a good one.
I wanted to learn how to cruise and decided the best way to learn to sail well was to race. Turns out there are lots of boats out there looking for crew, and I got hooked on racing. Been doing it on other's boats for 25yrs. Nice way to get lots of sailing and socialize with fellow sailors. Also mostly free sailing-I have kicked in time and minimal money to help cover some of the expenses.
I bought a Flying Scot to go along with my Laser. Family trailerable boat when wife and son came along, and am using it to get them familiar with sailing. Just in case I do buy a 'big' boat. I'm thinking now I probably won't go there. Too much work and expense for my current needs. I barely sailed the Scot this year.
But go do it if you think you would enjoy it. Costs less than a new Aero, and you can buy a used one and fix it yourself and save enough to buy the boat! Priorities....
Oh, and if you haven't heard it enough lately, have it surveyed. Lots of boats out there that aren't worth fixing. Cheap insurance.
