Depends on the SUV and the wagon

We had a Ford Exploder for 7 years. At the time, with #1 kid doing dog shows the carrying capacity for dog, crate, assorted debris and often a friend and her dog, crate, etc., was very useful. It was nice on vacations, too, when we could pack more than we really needed and do so less efficiently.
We finally dumped it for a 9-5 wagon. OK, it doesn't hold quite as much (due to the lower ceiling), but still could have done the same things with a little thinking and maybe use of the roof rack for some of the gear. Plus, it's a lot nicer to do a 3-4 hour trip in with a full load. For everything else it's a far better choice than the Exploder.
As for fuel mileage, I have to disagree with Tim. It is not "a couple miles per gallon" difference. We live in a semi-rural area and local driving with the Exploder was 15-16 mpg compared to the 9-5 at 22. And the best the Exploder ever got on the highway was 20 with a very light foot, compared to the fully loaded 9-5 at 32 mpg at 75 mpg.
