Stay with the pre 86-87 or so Saab if you don't like progress and innovations.
All car makers makes it more or less hard for regular Joe to tinker with their cars.
Volvo, I think, is the worst one in making it difficult to change electronic modules and having to do a software download to make the part talk to the car again.
BMW also have some ridiculous prices on their scan tool technology for the ones that needs to do it the legal way.
Since it is no one controlling China and what they can do, it is a flood of cracked tools coming from there but all those tools never come up to full factory standard but many times work ok for regular Joe.
Many times it comes down to how legal or illegal you want to be. I think many Saab owners couldn't care less about copyright infringement and patent protection laws as long as it would give them a chance to play with their car for a low cost.
