I may be from a newer generation that wasn't taught that way, but, the 2 main reasons I'd put my kids in a good course (once they're old enough) would be:
- teaching how to physically drive a vehicle from A to B is pretty easy. teaching safe driving habits, less so. most drivers have a number of bad driving habits (even though they do not realize this!!) + do you want to really pass those on to your kids?
- kids might listen better to a teacher than to dad
The course I took taught emergency braking + handling, but the biggest component was developing habits that avoid collisions in the first place. Some of those were not intuitive (eg you have to set up the opportunity to avoid being rear ended). They are now ingrained, so if I don't always do them (like circle check the car before getting in), I at least feel a little guilty about it!
