Ignition Module? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 17 May 2011 07:38:37 In Reply to: OT best friend's Volvo 242 no spark, BrettH, Tue, 17 May 2011 06:28:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I assume that Volvo's 1984 set up is similar to what was in my 1983 SAAB 900S (RIP). The Hall Effect Sensor output is amplified by this module (a small package about 1" x 2" x 0.5") to drive the coil - which produces a spark, which is distributed by the distributor, etc.
At some point in 27 years, the electronics in the ignition module can fail. The good news is that many cars of that era use the same part and they are readily available new or used - I think that I replaced mine with a used piece. I seem to recall that you may need silicon heat transfer paste to mount it, but it's been a long, long time.....
