New Saab dealership opens in Columbus Posted by Dan [Email] (#2459) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Dan) on Sun, 11 Sep 2011 14:26:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Earlier this week, I spoke with Tom Carpenter, the dealer principle of Ohio's -- and maybe the country's -- newest Saab dealer, located in the SE corner of Columbus. Thanks to club member Brian Kennedy's timely visit to Just Saab several weeks ago, one of the dealer employees there mentioned that they heard a new dealer was opening in Columbus. Brian passed this info to me and I quickly contacted my Saab Cars North America insider and got it confirmed, and shortly thereafter, was connected with Tom.
Saab of Columbus quietly opened several weeks ago in the former Saturn dealership in Groveport, currently known as Auto Center Southeast. Tom was the Saturn franchise owner in Columbus and had three stores before Saturn closed. This location was mostly for used car sales but Tom is taking on a new Saab franchise, even while things in Trollhattan remain tenuous.
He's very hopeful, as are many of us, that Saab will get through the short-term financial crisis so they can get back to production and begin to implement some of the long-term plans that you may have read about or heard about if you attended the Saab Convention last month.
Tom has about 15-20 new Saabs on the lot, including several 9-5s, 9-3s (including a Combi) and 9-4Xs. He's been driving a 9-4 and loves it. He said he's working on getting some Saab signs installed, and was planning to run a full-page ad in the Columbus Dispatch weekend edition soon, as well as get some coverage by the business section.
He'd very much like to work with the Saab Club of Central Ohio, and so in preparation for an official grand opening, it would be great for as many Saabs in central Ohio and beyond to show up to support this venture. No date has been set and it may be a weekday evening but I'll keep you posted. Additionally, he is open to hosting the club for a meeting, a new car walk-around event, and so forth. Although the dealership is closed on Sunday for now, we may also set something up with them as part of our annual Hocking Hills drive in late October.
It should be noted that Midwestern Auto Group is not giving up their Saab franchise as of now, but I hope Tom and his team can make a difference in Saab's visibility around here.
