Back in the day, I had an Escort radar detector and a CB radio, but that was when the national speed limit was 55 mph. Here in North Dakota, it's 75 on the interstate, and 75-80 is plenty fast for us, though it is nice to touch 100 once in a while when passing a truck or something else I don't want to be behind.

We had our Boxster out the other day and I gunned it to about 60 on an open stretch of road, only to be stopped by a police officer who informed me that the posted speed limit was 45. She agreed to list me as 55 mph, which was only a $10 fine and no points. Maybe she felt sorry for the old guy and his wife enjoying a late summer afternoon in their sports car with the top down.

When I drive the family around town in our Ford van, I'm pretty much a moving traffic barrier to all the hotshots who apparently can't see that the light ahead is turning red. There is actually some satisfaction in pulling up next to them while we both wait for the light to change, then they're off again, still yapping on their cell phone.

I can confirm that Les H does, indeed, drive a Volvo now.
