Confused about one thing - did she have them replace the head gasket or not? What "sealer" did they use, and what for? Every modern manufacturer I am aware of uses fast-cure RTV etc., stuff takes 5-15 minutes to cure. Nobody uses the 24-hour set time stuff anymore. Seems like if the lifters were apparently damaged we're talking about RTV for the valve cover - there's no other place I can think of on an engine that would use a sealer that could make it up through the oil system into the head.
I'm baffled at how they could not let whatever sealer they used not set long enough, and moreover how they could have used such a massive quantity of whatever it was to actually kill an engine in such a short period of time. RTV breaking loose might clog an oil passage, but it shouldn't totally kill an engine. That sounds more like major mechanical failure (forgot to tension the timing belt) or major electrical failure (forgot to connect the ignition system securely).
Regardless, I don't think it matters. Your friend brought in a running car, paid $700 for a repair, and she should get back a running, repaired car. I wouldn't sweat whatever it is they're doing, so long as the end result it what's expected...
I do agree with Justin - I'm not even sure why she's paying for this, although it's possible a head gasket is a "consumable" under the terms of a powertrain (hard parts) warranty.
