If you drive a lot --like 25K miles/yr-- then cost of gas is a big part of ownership. A hybrid or EV maybe makes sense. But if you drive only a moderate amount say around 10-12K or less, then the payback is almost unattainable with even the breakeven being out in the 10-15 year range. Then there's service, which is usually only available at the dealers.
And there are several fairly high-fuel-mileage, gas-engined cars available now, so getting a Pious or other alternative vehicle isn't necessary to save money on gas. And the payback is a whole lot faster because the cars are reasonably priced. And the better ones are pretty decent all-around cars that can be serviced easily.
Then there's whether you LIKE driving the hybrid/EV. Still a lot of compromises. The Prius for example, has very mediocre driving dynamics, a cheap interior and awful seats. The 48 mpg they could get on a trip (vs 30 or so in a Saab) comes at the expense back and leg pain, and less carrying capacity.
This will change somewhat in 5 years, but for now internal combustion is still the best bet IMHO.
