Question about Windows + licences + upgrades... Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Wed, 4 Jan 2012 20:08:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My father needs Windows for a course he is taking. Myself, I only use macs and have since I was five, basically my whole life.
He had an Acer and after three years the motherboard died. On that computer, I installed a Windows 7 upgrade to what was already there (Vista). I used the product key and all was great. Now it's a useless piece of junk (actually, on another note...what can I do with it? It's a three year old Acer with a dead MB, 320 gb hard drive, 2GB of DDR2 memory, DVD burner etc...sell it to someone? How much?)
So, I've decided to just install Windows 7 on the iMac (yuck...) using boot camp (why did Apple do this? to gain a larger market share? Can't believe Steve Jobs agreed to this). Problem is, I used the upgrade version and technically it's not legal to do that UNLESS you have an existing licence to an OS. Well, I do. It's just on the other computer (Vista with product key stuck to the side of the box). I did the install and it all works and activated. As far as I understand, merely having the license to the old OS (even if on another machine) grants me permission to use the upgrade. That's why they allow you to even do a clean install with just the upgrade. Thoughts?
Also, if I do sell the old computer with the dead MB (as just mentioned), can I keep the licence to the OS? 'Cause then if I sell it technically I'm in 'trouble'.
Thanks for your help.
Bender.
