Similar thing happened to me (4 way intersection, my turn to go, guy on the left decides to go, too...) just about 2 years ago. He also wanted to pay out of pocket, but thought it would be like $500, ended up being about $30 shy of $2000. My car is an '04 convertible, so maybe not the same kind of price. I ended up going through insurance. The write up of mine included a "recycled door shell" which I assume is just the external part of the door, and it was $562. I don't know how long you have to decide, I only waited about 3 or 4 days, after getting the estimate and letting the guy know it was going to be a lot more than he thought. I used a place called Auto Body Clinic, which I (and my SO) have had good experiences with, they're in Beverly, Peabody, Reading and Tewksbury, so maybe not a good choice for you. Years ago (mid-1990s) I used a place called Munroe in Watertown that did a great job on my non-Saab that I had back then, not sure if they're still around, though.
