That sounds about right.
What probably happened is you had one or more slow leaks that slowly depleted the coolant. When the coolant got low enough, the engine overheated and the head warped, thus causing the head gasket to fail.
So the important thing is to not just fix the head & gasket, but find and fix the leak(s) that started the whole episode.
I would also ask the guy for more info on what the "many small external leaks" are. It's pretty unlikely your car went from being fine to having "many" leaks overnight, unless it froze.
