Car insurance appraisal

How does one go about finding an appraiser to deal with a car insurance claim? I’ve read that the umpire might ultimately matter more. Does anyone have experience with this process? Did it work out in your favor or the insurers? I’m helping someone with several Sandy claims deal with an insurer that is threatening to invoke the appraisal clause because it’s taken them several tries to even get the various options listed correctly so we can have a basis upon which to negotiate. Getting cars properly valued in the days of CCC/Autodatex (this insurer uses Autodatex) reports is tough because these look good while containing suspect information and methodologies which undervalue cars. Even if statistically valid, they are subject to user inputs, which can skew the results. For example, one can use all base models and adjust up instead of using the highest model as comparable vehicles. If someone deals with this professionally or has offline suggestions, you can email me by clicking my name above.
Anyone know of info on Autodatex? There is some info explaining how CCC lowers payouts for insurers and discusses some litigation against CCC about it.
