I don't think that this is a turbo vs. NA thing... (there were no SPG verts per se, though people have made them, and SPG panels does not mean lowered suspension or more power, iirc, even SIS is the stock suspension)...
I don't think it was even a hard top vs. vert thing (though I would argue that the rigidity of the body matters a good deal more than a lowered suspension and more horses)... a hard top would have stood up better to the truck impact, but it was hit by a semi going at highway speeds after all...
I also don't think a Subaru would have fared any better (though they don't make verts)... Few Subarus I've driven handle anywhere as well as even a base NA c900 and aside from airbags in the newer ones, the difference in safety is probably minimal when one considers the weight difference: it's a car vs a semi. This is not an iihs test that all the manufacturers design to pass. It's going to be a seriously bad collision for any car.
Basically this was most likely a case of driver error.
