Heat pump electric hot water tank and woodstove anyone?

Just purchased my first house. 1800 sq ft split level built in 1959. Walls and ceilings are insulated.
Here in CT heating oil and electricity are really, really, no really expensive. Heating oil is around $3.50-$4.00 a gallon and we have the 2nd or 3rd most expensive electricity in the U.S. Looking for ways to not have to spend $600 a month in oil and cut back on my electric usage.
House had a brand new forced air oil fired with central air unit. Hot water is a 80 galllon regular electric. I have researched electric heat pump hot water heaters that use 62%+ less electricity than a conventional electric tank. For those that don't know about them they operate with a compressor in reverse of air conditioner where the hot side heats the water. My electric utility is offer a $300 rebate. I would be installing this myself so total cost looks to be around $700-$1000. I have read mixed reviews on them as they are still a fairly new product. Anyone have any experience with one? There are many reports of people having their electric bill drop $50 a month.
On to the heat issue. House is 1800 sq feet and has a masonry fireplace on the main floor in the living room. There are catherdral ceilings where the fireplace is and the upstairs is open to that room. The heat would rise right up to the upper level which would be a big plus. Many of my friends have wood burning fireplace inserts and love them. They have a blower on them and some are %85 efficient.
Anyone have any insight or experiences?
