I would think the electric motor would work well for the passing power. The prius's inadequacies are imho an issue of implementation not the technology per se. So run off the diesel power to get the range (of a combustible fuel), but use the electric motor everywhere it needs low end torque... that's why I wonder how important a turbo would be in the context of a hybrid. Now the way saab was going to do it was use the electric through the road primarily in neighbourhoods and awd scenarios but who knows how much it would be used for passing where the ice was already turbocharged... the electrification was more of an add-on, but quite an appealing solution imho, at least as a near term product. Ultimately I'm most interested in series hybrids, ie all the drive comes from the electric motor - the ice is just a generator... there are already some very high performance electric motors for cars... it's just that they aren't in the Prius or Leaf!
