I found that smaller wrenches were the worst, and the low end of the range of any mechanical type torque wrench is always the least accurate. On 40-200 in-lb range wrenches, it was not uncommon to see errors at the low end of 20-50%. But even on the larger ones, 10-20% error was not uncommon. I can also say with a high degree of confidence that no one can reliably tell, by feel, what a torque value is within even 20%. Of all the experienced mechanics who had their torque wrenches calibrated, none ever predicted when their wrench was catastrophically out of tolerance.
On a side not, dial type torque wrenches, which operate on essentially the same principle as beam types but have a couple of extra moving parts, are not much more stable than click type.
