those are the first places thieves look because it's widely known that everyone does this. I think a lot of places are not really a big concern for theft, but there are definitely surf spots where cars are specifically targeted because the thieves watch and know the owners are out in the water so they have lots of time... eg lots of people on the North Shore show up in the crappiest piece of junk car they could find and leave it unlocked with nothing in it...
I went through some effort to find a guts-less solution for our 2004 9-5. Nothing available at the time (earlier thin shaft keys though, yes - ilco makes a blank that will work). Maybe now? I wanted something thin I could stash in my wetsuit. I didn't go so far as to cut down a normal saab key, though that would be an option. Just need something to open the door that can be immersed in salt water.
