Getting Rid of Cable TV??!! Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Mon, 30 Sep 2013 22:27:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So, we have a special set up or I would be asking this question. For residential customers, Comcast provides Internet service only as an add-on to cable TV service. However, I use Comcast Business Class to run Saabnet.com and Poverty2Prosperity.org. Comcast Business Class Internet service is more expensive than residential Internet service, but that's okay, I need the Business Class bandwidth. For our residential service, we just have basic cable television for $100/month even. We're an enthusiastic Apple household, so besides the four iPhones, iPad, 2 MacBook Pros, and Extreme wifi router, we've also got an Apple TV which allows us to stream media from our iTunes library (we've ripped all our DVDs, so we have quite a large library), to purchase movies and TV shows from the iTunes store. Also, anything that we can show/see on our MacBook Pros can be run through the Apple TV (we watched a lot of unbroadcast Olympic events this way, although access required a confirmed cable TV account). In addition, we through the Apple TV, we could pay to have access to NetFlix and HuluPlus, although those don't really interest me. I'm a hockey fan and through the Apple TV, I can buy access to all NHL games next season for $150. If we cancel the cable TV service, we save $1,200 a year. Considering additional movie and TV show purchases, I still see us saving well over 50% of that money. However, there are two sticking points...
1. News. What do folks do for live news? CNN requires a participating cable subscription for access to most of its shows.
2. Live Sports... I'll get hockey, but we loved watching the olympics... I'd hate to miss that.
What do you think? I really want to cut the Cable TV cable, so to speak...
