WRs are fine to use as winter tires, especially if you live in an area where the roads are clear most of the time. If you get a lot of snow then "real" snow tires like Hakkas or Blizzaks are better. I've run WRs on 3 cars over several winters, including on a daughter's car in Maine, with no issues. What I like is that they wear better on dry roads than a normal snow tire, so you can get a bit more useful life out of them before they are relegated to general use. With the snowflake/mountain symbol you know they are good snow tires.
