Real snows don't do as well > 45 degrees F or so because the rubber formulation is more grippy when cold. That's why I figured these will be better now that it's winter. I know summer performance tires are lousy in the snow and < 45 degrees F. One of three times since 1981 I was stuck in a Saab was after modifying the 900T and adding performance tires, so now I have snows.
Tread depth not an issue. There's about 1/4". Tires are Contis, which would surprise me as OEMs plus there's plenty of wear left. Don't seem like 1998 originals. But no real information on the age of the tires.
It was not likely hydroplaning, as I understand it (more of a highway thing) just slipping on wet, flat pavement, worse in rain. Even if there is hydroplaning when starting/stopping between 0 and 30 mph, these tires have all sorts of grooves, sipes and whatever to direct water away. I'd think if it is anything, either too many grooves and not enough rubber (had this on old time snows that looked like tractor tires) or the rubber formulation, if they are really snows, and called M + S for marketing.
