Having no maintenance and especially being able to lock the door and leave for extended periods with no worries are great things. As others have mentioned, the monthly fees can be really high, and they're throwing money away just like rent especially if you aren't interested in some of the silly amenities a lot of newer places offer. All the HOA type regulations may or may not bother you (gasp, how dare you hang a towel from your balcony!), but if you don't have your own garage you'll almost certainly not be allowed to work on your Saab there! The big financial worry is that you really won't know much about the building and won't make decisions yourself on it. My old building (I was a renter) needed the front facade redone as it was leaking into the front units and each owner was hit with a huge assessment for this work. If you had a back unit there's no way you couldn't known about this, so it can be somewhat scary stuff.
