All the traction in the world is useless once ground clearance become an issue. And there's no real way to determine the depth of snow a car can tolerate since it depends in the snow--light fluff is very different from dense plowed snow, wet sloppy snow, etc. A Saab with snow tires on all four is a pretty formidable car in snow for the day to day conditions most of us encounter most of the time. But it does have limitations. The biggest problem with front drivers is that when going up steep hills the weight transfers to the rear of the car and the front tires can lose traction. And yes ground clearance is another limtation. You don't say where you live, but in places like the Rockies even AWD isn't enough. When I lived there the newspapers used to run public service articles telling people they needed snow tires even if they had AWD and it's true. If I had spent another winter there I would have gotten studded snow tires on my Subaru. So in answer to your question, it's sort of a sliding scale. A Saab with snow tires will get you most of the places you want to go most of the time. But AWD and more ground clearance will give you more capability.
