Give me some credit here! I started my whole post calling out the fact that it's anecdotal. ;o) Maybe I didn't make it clear enough in my post, but anecdotal evidence tells me nothing more than one person's experience. It is particularly useless in drawing general conclusions. In offering (explicitly identified) anecdotal evidence, I was suggesting that no conclusion could be drawn about BMWs or Saabs or any other car maker.
You state that all cars are more complicated and lots needs to be done at the dealer. That's the reality of new cars... I guess. It wasn't just BMWs which were simpler and easier to work on/maintain in the 80s and 90s.
I was also somewhat taken by saabsince93b had such a terrible experience with a BMW 2002. (That's much older than the dreaded "new" BMWs, so the anecdotal evidence continues to conflict.)
New BMWs (or any truly new car these days) are either infinitely easier or infinitely harder to work on that new Saabs... I guess it depends on your perspective.
Cheers,
~Peter
