Peter,
The 4 cylinders are a bit less, but still require the "service" position (either removing the front of the car as shown in the picture or being bent over by a mechanic - HA!).
TB on the 4s is usually around 800 from an indy (ymmv). FWIW, wife drives an '11 Sportwagen TDI. TB service on the CJAA code common rail diesel is 120K miles. Of course, the Mk 6 tdi's have their own issues, but its been a solid car (KNOCK ON WOOD) since the warranty ran out. No HPFP issues (Still knocking on wood) at 62K and counting.
I have an 04 A4 1.8TQM and Bill is right. They are great machines when running right, but $$$$ when not (a good - no, GREAT indy and DIY helps).
IMHO, no matter what the brand these days, newer cars are made cheaper and of less quality than earlier cars. Of course I'm one of those C900 fanboys.
Shoot me an email if you want any more info on the TDI.
Take Care,
Nate
