In the mid 1970's I got a farm house with an oil furnace. The screen was fouled and the filter needed to be replaced. The fire box had been retrofitted with fire brick to increase the combustion temperatures and efficiencies. The fire box was full of carbon and ash. I cleaned everything involved as best as I could and adjusted the blower air intake shroud to get a better flame. I watched the flame as I increased and decreased the air flow. I got it to be a bit smokey then increase air flow until the things just appeared clean. Higher fuel pressures will create finer oil drops and should improve combustion. I check a few times as time went on to see how the combustion chamber looked. If it was clean, I was happy.
