Basically told me the same thing you posted. NEVER install any updates unless:
1) The update is identified by Microsoft as a critical update (Just say NO! to any thing that is a recommended update), and
2) I first read the accompanying details for the update and recognize the problem the update is designed to correct is affecting my machine.
In short, if the machine is operating correctly with the present versions of software, DO NOT SCREW WITH IT! I remember this from Windows 95 years ago but had gotten too trusting or lazy in the mean time.
