I rented a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and it had a regular key.
I do not blame the drivers killed. However, I do think that if the drivers were excellent drivers, they wouldn't have died. The legal blame still rests on GM but the practical side is that you have to be a good driver.
One of the 12 killed was driving drunk and 69 mph in a 25 mph zone. At least two of the dead (unknown the total number) were not wearing seat belts. At least 5 were women and I have not read any reports of men dying. It could be that women get more sympathy so lawyers put out pictures of dead women drivers.
GM and Saab must have known something. The Cadillac BLS key has only a tiny hole for the key ring and the key is hanging by the steering wheel. A tiny hole allows less force if other keys are swinging. A tiny hole was retrofitted in some Chevy Cobalts. By hole, I mean where the key ring attaches.
