Ignorance is blissful - until you ride a high end bike which some of my friends have and in some cases you can sense more of the pedal effort going to the pavement. The modern aluminum road bikes all seem to have the thicker down tubes and better designed frames from those in days past so I assume the frame holds it's rigidity better - you do feel the road more in aluminum, certainly less forgiving than the carbo stuff.
But I think you get used to what you are riding, and being in good physical condition makes the most difference.
My posts are more in the context of the recreational rider - certainly if you are a competitive rider a high end bike is more of a necessity.
I have my old Viscount as a keepsake - I rode it for 20 yrs and not sure how many thousands of miles and mtn passes I covered with it, going on rides in the summer over Vail pass from Breck and back was a pretty routine ride yrs back - and with no granny gear.
