The alternator can go bad, not charge the battery, and the dash lights may not tell you.
My wife's 9-5 suddenly wouldn't start. Battery was flat. And it was also a Walmart battery that was 3.5 years old. Recharged it and it was dead again in 2-3 days. But no battery light on the dash. I checked to see if the alternator was charging but my test (not a great connection) was inconclusive, although I thought the alternator was possibly marginal at 11 years and 130K miles.
So I went to Advanced Auto for a new batt, figuring it was a good idea anyway--we had a long trip coming up and I also didn't want my wife to have to deal with it next winter when I was traveling.
As soon as the new battery was installed I got the battery light on the dash. The Advanced guy did a test that showed the alternator was only giving me about 11.5 volts--about what my test showed. They had one in stock and I got to spend some of July 4 weekend swapping the alternator.
