Probably pretty good advice most of the time, but I tend to agree with EGD here in that a 2001 lpt really isn't worth more than he is offering. Heck, there is a navy 2004 Arc wagon in our area with fewer miles than his for <4k.
I would take the cash with the car offer because he could still buy another car, he would still have his car, which is also easily fixable even if harder to resell with the salvage title.
I would be afraid that asking for more estimates, or attempting to negotiate might result in a lower offer in this case, or at least not significantly more... but who knows? Most of the time it is worth a try, but the numbers he got sound fair to generous imho.
