With something like the Volt the car runs on the gas motor when it's not in electric mode. The i3 is different in that it's totally electric. The only thing the engine does is function as a generator. Since it's a pretty small engine, I'm wondering if it might only generate enough electricity to extend the range but not enough to run infinitely. I can't find a good explanation on the BMW site. Either that or because it has a very small fuel tank, the range quoted is to when the gas runs out. I'd be curious to know actually. Could you keep filling it and drive cross country? Not sure.
