Since you are lucky enough to have gas - I would imagine the gas one would be more economical? Maybe I am wrong. Gas heat is just a little more expensive that wood pellets - otoh firewood can be significantly cheaper.
I am in the process of installing a hydronic wood burning stove/fireplace with 120 gal storage tank and tied to the existing oil burning boiler/baseboard system. My domestic water tank is tied to the same system is well.
Another project I am doing at the same time is a central AC / heat pump. My Efergy monitor is in the mail - I plan to install in just to measure this system. Do you need anything extra to download the data to a PC?
