I wonder if different parts of the roof are designed to do different thing. To pass the moose test and protect in rollovers, you need strong pillars and framework connecting the pillars; the sheet metal covering the middle of the roof is prob less important, and I can imagine a manufacturer using thinner metal there to save weight.
It may be a good thing the unfortunate window washer fell onto a Camry instead of a Saab. 11 stories, wow.
