Actually, they call it a 5-link suspension Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 22 Mar 2015 19:36:46 In Reply to: VW/Audi front suspension rebuild. Four control arms plus the "C"-shaped anti-swaybar links.
Yes, I've done this job on my 1996 A4. The real killer part is removing the long pinchbolt that holds the two top control arms into the vertical member - see the two long black bolts in your picture. If you live in the rustbelt, be prepared for pain. I used the generally well-regarded technique found on Passatworld (saw off the bolt head and try to pull the body out by using a coupling nut and washers), but it did not work - the bolts snapped on both sides. I had to have it removed with an oxyacetylene torch and an air hammer. I discussed this some time later with an Audi dealer tech and he said that he had good success using an air hammer from the start. Others have drilled it out, or used whatever means they had available. Removing the ball joints is easy in comparison, and some of those will also be tight.
When reassembling, be sure to have the arms in normal resting position before tightening everything back up, otherwise you will tighten the bushings in a twisted position and they will fail quickly.
