Yeah, we get a fair bit of snow, but not like in the mountains. January and February tend to be very cold and sunny, not always a lot of precip, so nothing melts. Where I grew up, snowmaking was pretty much necessary, so the hills there would blast away all season long, stockpiling to make it deep in the season. Here, they just put some on early and let nature do the rest unless it is a really bad year, but they are lazy/cheap about how much they put on to start. As a result, there can be rock/stump remnants that get exposed even in Feb (especially in the glades), which is stupid imho. It means that often the steepest, most tree sheltered runs are hardly open if at all, and that's the fun stuff! Really, it would be better if they go hard in november to build a wicked deep base early in the season, on the whole hill. Then leave it to nature. I hate skiing on snowmaker snow, but it does provide some good safety margin and would allow access to all trails even well into the spring. Sadly this does not seem to be in the economic self-interest of the local hills.
The mountains are different however - I've skied Sunshine in early Dec and there was already over 10' of snow (Sunshine has zero snowmaking capacity, or did then anyway)... and the good stuff also... living near there would be a dream...
