I've seen this happen to several people around me, and it's happened to me once. Basically, 99% of the time, your manager will win. In the rare cases where inept managers finally get what was coming to them, they've already left a swath of irreversible destruction in their wake (there was an example from just earlier this year).
When it started happening to me, I took immediate initiative to find another position within the company ASAP. I also stepped over my manager to engage my upper management, but I knew from other people's past experience not to expect too much, so I did it mostly to buy myself as much more time as possible while I was looking. It was a miserable 6 months until I found myself another position, and I've never looked back. Ironically, despite what'd happened, I was later recruited by someone else in that group for a position that would have been a promotion for me, which I declined to consider. Go figure.
If you want to stay, my advice is to find another position within the company or even the same group under a different manager, as that's usually the easiest thing to do. If you don't think that's possible given the remaining time you have, leave on terms that maximize the amount of financial compensation you will receive.
Taking time off, if you can afford it, is not a bad idea after a rough experience. I knew someone who did after an experience like yours, and I think it did wonders for her. I've been continually employed since school and taking time off sounds very appealing to me right now.
