I've had that happen too, but only once in 25 years of driving. Losing trunk space and carrying excess weight for the 9124 days I did not actually need a spare for the 1 day I did is not a good trade.
Conversely, twice when I've needed to use a spare I found the lug nuts were seized to the point standing on the wrench would not free them. If I'd had a mobility kit, I wouldn't have needed a tow.
I'm overlooking the times I've had to limp along the side of the road because of it not being safe to jack up a car, either due to insufficient shoulder, unpaved shoulder, or incline.
For me, the odds favor the compressor over the donut.
And, frankly, not having to crawl around on the road & mess up my clothes many times versus that one time in a quarter century I would have needed to call AAA for service? Not even a debate.
