largely because the four cars in the family are '96 to '03 Saabs ranging in mileage from 145K, 175K, 224K and 230K (not respectively). And while they all need stuff, they also basically work fine. We try to do repairs as needed and there haven't been too many surprises. It works for now, but it won't forever, since Saab is no longer in business.
My daughters won't replace their '99 and '00 9-3SEs with Saabs. Subys and Yotas are on their lists. My wife will probably go from the 9-5 wagon to some kind of CUV. And I'll wind up in the wagon. After that? TBD.
For DD cars, good maintenance can get you a long way, as can avoiding winter, but the cars will eventually wear out or some mega repair will just not make sense.
I adore my indy Saab shop, which now also works on other makes, but there is a lot to be said for having a car that you can get fixed almost anyplace (like on a trip) and that you can easily get parts for--as in go into the store and walk out with the parts.
