I hear that. I'm always amazed at how little overall knowledge and interest many people have in their fields. Certainly not just cars, I've known people who work for sports magazine who have no interest in sports, etc. I always kind of think, wow aren't here a million car nuts, sports nuts, etc. who would kill for those jobs? Who knows I guess, and it's certainly not to say that these people aren't doing a good job. It's just strange the path probably most of us take in trying to make a living.
That said, I'm pretty sure the firewall is universally considered the metal 'wall' between the passenger compartment and the engine bay. As automotive terms go, it's probably a pretty intuitive one! I'm sure rear engine cars have a rear firewall, and I know some racing bodies require the installation of one if you have a trunk mounted fuel cell, and of course the Saab 9000 has its 'false firewall' in front of the actual one. I've also heard the term bulkhead used instead of firewall, which I'm guessing is the more Euro term (I'm always amazed the the number of parts with different US/UK terms, but I guess that's what happens when cars were developed simultaneously with a giant ocean in the middle and no telephones).
