Ironically, the best winter tyres I have had on a 9-5 was a 10 yr old + set of Dunlop? winters made in Germany. In spite of the age, the tread compound almost looked like new, not that grey, dried out (crazing?) look you get with many tires after just a few years. I acquired the tires only because I was after the inexpensive Viking 16 inch rims they were mounted on. I decided to test them for a few weeks on snow and ice as an experiment. I was so impressed, I kept them on for two full winters until they were down to 4/32 at the end. The were the most unassuming winter tires I have dealt with. Old, more than half worn out with one leaking and an unimpressive tread design. Beauty is only skin deep - I still sometimes yearn for them in the middle of a long winter drive. They are definitely part of my Valhalla Hall of Honour.
