Freezing water will have a place to expand. Although this will require opening the drip line at the automatic valve.
We have an in-ground pool in Michigan and blowing out the water lines with air is the primary winterization step. That, and making sure any possible water intrusion point is sealed and gasketed after the lines are blown dry.
