The problem I have is several older vehicles that are not used much, so the tires always dry-rot way before the tread wears out. So even if the off-brand tires last 1/2 as long as the expensive ones I probably still won't wear them out before rot sets in.
My go-to tire for cars that get regular use has been General Altimax RT43, a nice mid-price tire. My '95 9000 previously wore Michelins from the previous owner and at least with my style of driving (think "old man wearing a hat") I can't tell the difference between those and the Generals.
