Any thoughts on when the transition to coated took place? I've got an '87 Saab, '96 BMW, and '02 Jag and they all seem to have non-coated leather to me. However, I rent cars for work pretty often and when I get one with leather I'm pretty appaled by it's quality compared to older cars - it feels thin and plasticy, and no leather smell despite being new cars. These are mostly American and Asian cars and not super high end, but still the quality of the leather is very disappointing. I'm wondering if the switch to coated didn't happen until after most of the cars we are discussing were made (and I suspect European cars held on to proper leather a bit longer than Asian and American cars)
I do kind of miss the vinyl seats you could get on BMWs and Mercedes in the '80s (eg MB-Tex). That stuff was absolutely invincible and not really any less like leather than a lot of modern actual leather seats
