Have you started taking advantage of interest rates for savings. I moved our liquid cash to CIT Bank (a division of First Citizens Bank) which is giving us a 5.05% return.
This is not to be confused with CD (Certificate of Deposit) product offered on their home page. This is a savings account with no time requirements for deposit. You may freely move your money in and out at any time.
Important note, it does require a $5,000 balance to get the 5% return.

Forbes gives them a favorable review too. I've found it quite easy to transfer money from Wells Fargo to CIT and back.
